on the ACT. If you do NOT meet
these prerequisites, or have any doubts about your placement level, see me
immediately.
TEXT: Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions (Third
Edition),
by Larson, Hostetler and Edwards (Houghton-Mifflin), Chapters P through 5.
There may be supplementary materials; you may consult any other sources you find helpful, (unless otherwise directed. Cite your references in your assignments.
*Each student will be required to use a programmable graphing calculator.
Classroom demonstrations will be based on the
TI-82; TI models 82-86 are recommended.
You may use any model you wish, but you are
expected to know (or learn) how to use it!
Laptops, TI-89, 92, or other devices with QWERTY
keyboards will not be
allowed. *
*You will need about fifty 3x5 index cards. *
COURSE TOPICS:
* Functions * Limits and
Continuity * Differentiation and its Applications * Antidifferentiation *
* Definite Integral *
Fundamental Theorem of Calculus * First-Order Differential Equations *
COURSE GOALS:
* Develop new
problem-solving and reasoning skills * Approach problems numerically,
graphically and analytically * Understand the motivating questions for
differential and integral calculus * Apply the ideas and methods of mathematics
* Use technology effectively to explore new ideas and solve problems * Express
mathematical concepts verbally and in writing
* Appreciate mathematics
as a study in itself and as part of the language of science * Stimulate
curiosity and creativity * Develop as a learner and thinker *
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attendance
is not recorded, but it is expected. You must complete all
assignments on time and are responsible for all that transpires in class
whether or not you are there.
Collaborative learning is encouraged and will occasionally be required;
but remember that only YOU will be taking the exams.
*COME PREPARED * ASK QUESTIONS *
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!*
Like all mathematics, calculus is not a spectator
sport; you will learn only by doing!
Consistent effort will be rewarded - but
procrastination will also have its rewards...
don't fall behind!
There are tutors (FREE!) in the Mathematics Resource and Tutoring Center (MRTC; SCEN 202 and 206). Their hours are 9:30am - 4:30pm Monday through Friday (subject to revision). You can also get help at the Enhanced Learning Center (ELC). Take advantage of my office hours, send e-mail, drop in, or make an appointment to see me.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AND EVALUATION
∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫
There are 750 total points available for this
course; general guidelines for letter grades
(subject to change; but they won't get any more
strict) are:
90-100% - A; 80-89% - B; 70-79% - C; 60-69% - D; below 60% - F.
The course points are distributed as follows:
• COMPREHENSIVE, COURSE-WIDE EXAMS:
THU
OCT 14 MIDTERM
EXAMINATION 6:00
- 7:30 p.m. 150
pts
THU
DEC 9 FINAL
EXAMINATION 12:30
– 2:30 p.m. 200
pts
• CLASSWORK: 100 pts (as
described below)
• TESTS: 300 pts
(four 75-point tests, as described below)
∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫∫
• COMPREHENSIVE, COURSE-WIDE EXAMS:
350 pts
Be present and prepared. ELIMINATE ANY CONFLICTS NOW.
Make-ups for these exams will be VERY hard to come by! Review materials will be available in a
few weeks.
• CLASSWORK: 100 pts
Daily:
“Two-Point Quizzes” – Ask and Answer/Quick
Query; 10 percent
Most days, there will be a short break (could be
at the beginning, middle, or end of class) when I will ask you to respond on
a 3x5 index card to one of the
following:
Answer
a question about the reading assignment.
Summarize
a topic we have been studying.
Solve
a short problem, similar to assigned homework.
Ask
ME a question, or tell me how things are going.
Each “index card
opportunity” will count as two points. I will drop five of these scores,
and use the average of the remaining
points as one-tenth of your classwork grade.
Homework will be assigned DAILY but collected
only periodically. Mastery of the
material is not possible without practice! Each week there will be one or two 25-point assignments
(providing a variety of ways to approach the course material).
Rather than "Better late than never",
our motto is "Better some than none."
LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND THERE ARE NO
MAKE-UPS.
Of twenty-one scores, the lowest three will be dropped, and the average of the remaining points will be ninety percent of
your classwork grade.
• EXAMINATIONS: 300 pts
I
will give four in-class examinations (in addition to the midterm and final),
each worth 75 points. Part of each
test score may come from a writing assignment or project. These will be announced at least one
week in advance. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UPS.
If you miss a test, notify me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If you have a LEGITIMATE and DOCUMENTED
excuse, your grade will be recalculated without that test.
*Bonus* Correct and resubmit
your graded exams to gain one-fifth of the points missed. This is an "all or nothing"
deal: the solutions submitted must
be perfectly correct to receive any additional credit. Example: If your original score is 60, you can
gain up to 3 points (one-fifth of the 15 points deducted). You may work with others on these
corrections. Because of this bonus
policy, we will not spend time going over exams, but you are quite welcome to
discuss them with me outside of class.
Note: this policy does not apply to the
midterm or the final.
∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ N.B. - F.A.Q.
∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫
Remember that this policy does NOT apply to
either the midterm or final exam.
When
you take an in-class test, I will grade it and return it to you promptly. You will find, however, a distinct lack
of the comments I usually make on homework. It is your mission
to
use whatever resources you like to determine why points were deducted, and
correct any errors to regain a portion of those missed points. You may work together, with me,
with a tutor, with friends, family, roommates, bosses, significant others, and
most certainly with your book open!
After a few days, I will ask you to resubmit the original test,
UNALTERED (if alterations of any kind are made, this offer is null and void),
with your
new
and improved solutions on separate paper.
I will examine the new solutions, and
if
they are correct, then one-fifth
of the points missed will be restored to your test score.
If
a problem is not correct, then no points will be restored.
Notice that it pays to get it right the first time!

Midsemester Grades: In
the sixth week of class, current grades will be reported to the dean’s
office. At this point, you will
also have the opportunity to evaluate this course and instructor.
Special
Accommodations: Students who are registered with the Center for
Students with Disabilities must notify the instructor by the end of the first
week of class, or within one week of registering with CSD.
I also require ADVANCE
notice (at least one week) of University-related absences which affect exams or
other assignments. If you
are (for example) a student-athlete, please keep me regularly and promptly
informed of your scheduled absences.
Academic
Honesty: You may work with other students on most
assignments, but you are expected to write your own solutions (supporting and
explaining all answers). There
will be NO tolerance for
cheating or plagiarism; University policies will be enforced in such cases.
Inclement
Weather Policy: Class will meet
unless the University is closed.
On-campus students are expected to be present. Off-campus students should make their own decisions in
the best interests of personal safety.
Off-campus students will not be penalized for being absent on the days
the Fayetteville Public Schools are closed due to weather. If attendance is severely affected by weather, deadlines or exam dates may
be adjusted.
Please do NOT call me OR the Mathematics
Department with weather-related inquiries!
