Interested in working in the Language Processing Lab?

Please read the information on this page and then fill out and submit the application below!

Thank you for your interest in the Language Lab. Here's some information that you should know:

The research in the lab is primarily concerned with the cognitive processes that are involved in comprehending narratives. I conduct experiments in which people read stories and I use a variety of techniques to try to understand how the readers are comprehending what they read.

In the lab, you would hold a research assistant position. What this means is that you'd be doing things like helping design experimental materials, running subjects, assisting with data analysis, reading journal articles, and all of the other things that are involved in the research process. You would receive course credit for working in the lab. In addition to the course credit and everything about languange that you'd be learning, working as a research assistant looks great on your resume. And if you're responsible and do a good job I'd also be happy to write a letter of recommendation for you when you take the next step in your career.

You'd be expected to put in around 6-10 hours per week, mostly in the lab and lab meetings. Lab meetings occur once a week, last up to an hour, and are mandatory--they'll be scheduled to fit everyone's schedule. The hours you put in running subjects are flexible and will be fit into the rest of your schedule. Sometimes you will be asked to do some work outside the lab (e.g., writing short passages). There is no requirement for a paper or anything like that, but you'd be expected to participate in lab meetings by reading articles and being aware of what's going on in the lab.
