This is a list of the most asked questions I get by e-mail - and their answers. They are in no particular order, although someday I may try to put them in one.
- What was the name of Festus' mule?
Festus' mule was named Ruth. (See the picture at the top of the page)
- What was the name of Matt's horse?
My old answer was "As far as I know Matt's horse's name was never given on the show." I have gotten a lot of e-mail about this from really with-it visitors. Apparently Matt's horse's name was Buck. Thanks to everyone who wrote in to tell me! I even heard it for myself recently when TV Land showed "The Bullet." At the beginning of part 1 Festus calls Matt's horse Buck.
- What was the name of Miss Kitty's saloon?
The Long Branch
- Do I know anything about the 1969 or 1970 promotion in which bricks from Dodge City were sold or given away?
No, I have no idea what that may have been about, how much the bricks are worth nowdays, how many bricks there were, where the money went or anything. But if anyone else knows, please write in! This is one of the most popular questions.
I got this the other day from a Gunsmoke fan:
I noticed that one of your questions centered on bricks in Dodge City. I'm
from Liberal, KS originally, (60 miles from DC) but my wife is from Dodge
City. In fact my father-in-law was part of the urban renewal project which
resulted in tearing up of the old front street. One day I did ask my
father-in-law about the bricks which were destroyed. His comment is that
to his best understanding they simply were stockpiled with the other
material at a local dump. This whole process took place in the early
1970's. Hope this helps!
- Do I know where people can get the Gunsmoke book by the Barabases?
Visit or call your local bookstores. If they don't have it in stock, any bookstore worth anything should be willing and able to order it for you, or at least check to see if it is still in print. I had to order my copy.
You can also order it online from Amazon.com. Visit http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0899504183/tvseriesreferencA/.
If you don't mind owning a used book, you can sometimes find it at Interloc (http://www.interloc.com/). New this book costs about $75. Used, you may be able to find it for about $45. Either way this book will be a welcome reference for any Gunsmoke fan.
- Do I know what any members of the cast are up to these days?
No, not really. I know that some of them are dead (Amanda Blake, Milburn Stone, Ken Curtis), but I don't really know what any of the others are doing (tracking Burt Reynolds may not be too hard...) I don't watch a lot of TV right now, so I'm not even sure how active some of the others may be. I don't know of any web pages devoted to any of the stars (but there probably is at least one for Burt Reynolds, I just haven't looked). I'm sorry.
Update!! Buck Taylor has his own web page. Visit it at http://www.bucktaylor.com.
Fan John writes: "Buck Taylor is a resident of Wise County, Texas. I just moved to Boyd, Texas
where many locals here talk about him stopping into their establishments. He
has an autographed picture hanging in one of our local restaurants. I've
never seen him, but chances are good if you live here."
From an anonymous AOL fan: "Buck Taylor, who played Newly,
was in a TNT original production of Gettysburg he played a union soldier.
Dennis Weaver who played Chester now hosts the Western Channel on Satelite.
James Arness who played Matt has done at least 4 Gunsmoke movies."
- Do I know when Ken Curtis died?
This is kind of morbid, isn't it? According to the IMDb, Ken Curtis died on April 29, 1991. I don't know what he died of, however.
Fan Gary Mercer writes: "Born in Lamar, Colorado 7/2/1916, died 4/28/1991 of what not sure, as have two
reasons, one from heart attack."
- Do I have any plans to do a complete episode guide or list?
No. I just don't have the time. There are hundreds of episodes. I have listed the broadcast history of the Radio Series (visit the Radio Info Page), but the TV series is way out of my league. If you want a printed episode guide, you'll have to buy the Gunsmoke book (mentioned above and on the Links and Resources page). There are a couple of online episode guides. Try looking at http://cialab.ee.washington.edu/Marks-Stuff/Gunsmoke/Gunsmoke.html-ssi or http://www.rionet.com.br/~mcbs/gunsmoke.htm
- How old am I?
I don't really get this question flat out. Usually it's more like "Judging by what you say, I must be a lot older than you." I'm 32. Now the whole world knows!
- Have you gotten my last e-mail message?
Chances are good that I have. I have a four year old, and a one year old. I do the Gunsmoke page and my Scarecrow and Mrs. King page in my constantly dwindling spare time. If you e-mail me I may not answer for a couple of weeks. I'm not a lazy bum, just a busy and tired mommy!
- What about info on the recent Gunsmoke movies?
I've only seen the first movie (it was the only one with Amanda Blake). You can find out more info about each of them here. I know that they are available at our local video store, so you may want to check out that avenue if you want to buy them.
