The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi was founded by Heriberto M. Stein in 1921 at the University of California, Berkeley. It was originally known as the "Sociedad del Prado" Our motto is "Spanías Didagéi Proágomen" (we carry on under the inspiration of Spain). The society's colors are red and gold. Sigma Delta Pi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.
The Gamma Epsilon Chapter was founded at the University of Arkansas in 1950. We are proud to have Dr. Mindy Badia (mbadia@comp.uark.edu) as our new faculty sponsor.
Our Purpose
It is the purpose of Sigma Delta Pi to honor those who achieve excellence in the study of Spanish language, literature, and the culture of Spanish-speaking peoples, and those who endeavor to make better known the Hispanic contributions to modern culture. We desire to encourage a greater interest in, and deeper understanding of, Hispanic Culture and to promote friendly relations and mutual respect among Spanish-speaking and English-speaking nations.
Membership Requirements
Membership is open to anyone under the following stipulations. Undergraduates must have completed five semesters of college work, the equivalent to three years of college Spanish, including a third year class in Spanish or Latin American literature or civilization, and have a g.p.a of at least 3.0. Graduate students must have complete at least fifteen semester hours of Spanish with a "B" average.
