Research Interest

My research interests are very diverse and involve projects with direct human and environmental consequences. My master’s thesis involved studying the biogeochemical processing of nitrate in a mantled karst aquifer to determine if poultry litter applied to pasture land was negatively impacting downstream water quality. Using stable isotopes of (N, O) and mixing models, it was determined that up to about 15% of nitrate loss was due to biological processing.

Current Research:

I am currently trying to determine the source and environmental conditions conducive to production of the taste and odor compound 2-Methyl-Isoborneol in the drinking water reservoir in NW Arkansas. Preliminary evidence suggests that both climate and nutrient limitation may be important. Years with high rainfall leads to high Si:TP, TN:TP ratios which suppresses cyanobacterial growth and allows for year-round diatom domination in the reservoir. Years with low rain fall leads to N depletion and summer cyanobacterial domination followed by taste and odour outbreaks.
