MARINE GEOLOGY - GEOL 5533

LABORATORY #4 - MARINE GEOLOGY REFERENCES

Due 13 October 2003

This week, Ms. Jan Dixon (GEOS reference librarian) will provide an overview of electronic resources available from the library. These will include online full-text resources, citation search engines, and bibliographic management software (RefWorks). Your assignment for this week is to search library resources for appropriate reference material that you will use for you term paper. Once you have located appropriate references, you will export this list to RefWorks in the format of the Geological Society of America Bulletin to be included in the References Cited section of your term paper.

You must obtain a minimum of 8 references for your topic from academic journals - not popular press, web sites, or textbooks, but legitimate journal articles. These will form the foundation of your term paper and should be cited in the body of your paper somewhere, as well as be included in your reference list at the end.

You should prepare your reference list using RefWorks and submit to me on lab on 13 October 2003. I will grade your references on how well they adhere to GSA Bulleting standards, so you should endeavor to make them adhere perfectly. It is possible that RefWorks will contain some errors, and it is up to you to make certain your reference style conforms to that of the GSA Bulletin. That means you will need to proofread your references once you have printed them from RefWorks and make any necessary corrections. It is important that each of your begin to self-check your work for correctness as you will be ultimately responsible for errors that occur in your theses, and you are in the best position to provide quality control and quality assurance of your work.
