Emergent Property View

Four features of the EPV (P 241f)

1. Wholes and Parts: "Each level has properties of the wholes at that level that are not properties of their constituent parts." (P 241b)

2. Levels of Explanation and Complementarity: "Each level . . . can be explained by using concepts appropriate at that level." (P 241b)

3. Causation Between Levels: "Lower levels in the hierarchy cause things to happen at higher levels but not vice versa." (P 242a)

4. Resultant of the Self: "The self is a series of events which `ride' on top of [supervene upon] the brain." (P 242a)
