Why keep straight on
what
is
or
is not
up to us
Epictetus (P 524b)
If you confuse things that are up to you with things that are not:
you will be impeded
you will be grieved
you will be troubled
you will blame gods and men
If you keep straight on what is up to you and what is not:
nobody will compel you
nobody will forbid you
you will not blame anyone
you will not complain about anything
you will not do a single thing unwillingly
you will have no enemy
no one will hurt you
