Indentification

Adult - Pepper weevil adults are small reddish to black weevils (Fig.3). Length averages about 3 mm and the beetles integument often is marked with whitish markings.  The weevil's mouthparts occur on the end of a long decurved snout.  This is the distinguishing character that places the pepper weevil in the family Curculionidae of the order Coleoptera.

Egg - Pepper weevil eggs are minute and less than 1 mm in length.  At oviposition eggs are white and become slightly darker as the embryo develops.

Larvae - Upon hatching from the egg, larvae are minute white grub like larvae.  By maturity larvae are about 5 mm in length and their integument contains areas of gray and white (Fig. 4).  A tan head capsule is also present.

Pupa - Pepper weevil pupae are white when first developed from the larvae stage (Fig. 5).  Within a few days additional features including black eyes, wing pads and a decurved snout can be recognized.
