NSF-REU: Research Experience for Undergraduates Integrated examination of volcanic systems using field volcanology, satellite geodesy, and modeling Dominica, West Indies

Travel to the island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles for 4 weeks to study volcanic processes.

Stay at the lovely Archbold Tropical Research Station.

Visit and work with the Dominica Public Seismic Network.

See a Boiling Lake.

Spend 4 weeks at either California State University, San Bernardino or the University of Arkansas

Potential research topics and post-field trip location:

(note that GPS geodesy is through UA and field volcanology is through CSUSB)

• Constraining surface deformation using  GPS geodesy (UA)

• Identifying characteristic behavior of volcanoes by measuring stratigraphic sections and sampling for geochronology (CSUSB)

• Determining flow types and path from  particle-size analysis and flow modeling (UA or CSUSB)

• Assessing changes in fumarole temperature and geochemistry of geothermal waters (CSUSB)

• Examining the relationship of volcanism and surface deformation to the kinematics of regional deformation (UA)

Funding:

• Stipend of $3,200 for 8 weeks

• Travel to/from student's location to UA/CSUSB and Dominica

• Lodging and food at Archbold Tropical Research Station in Dominica

• Housing in dormitories (UA) or apartment (CSUSB) and food allowance

• Travel support of $500 to attend a national geosciences meeting during academic year 2006-2007

• Mid-year conference at CSUSB in 2007-2008 for all participants
