Observatory - Main subjects

OVSP is located in Pasto, a city with a total population of about 350.000 inhabitants, situated 9 km East from Galeras volcano. The OVSP was installed in 1989 when the volcano began the present period of activity. Actually, we are working in the following projects: Surveillance of Galeras volcano, seismo-tectonic activity around Galeras volcano, Geochemistry in volcanoes located at south of Colombia (Nariño Department), risk analysis of Galeras volcano and hazard map on Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes, Geology and chrono-stratigraphy in Azufral volcano. Also we give technical support to the Regional Disaster Committee.

Seismology

The seismicity at Galeras volcano is monitored by nine telemetered stations, vertical component seismometers, natural period of 1.0 seconds (fig 1). One of these stations (Urcunina) has 3-component seismometer.

In March 1996 the BGR from Germany (Bundesanstalt fuer Geowissenschften und Rohsoffe) and the OVSP installed at 1.6 km south to the active cone from Galeras (near to Cráter-2 station) a broad-band, three component seismometer station.

As a complement of the cooperation program between BGR and INGEOMINAS, this year was developed a training course "Geophysical Methods Applied to Volcano Monitoring". This event made focus in seismology, gaschemestry, thermography and electromagnetic methods. In addition, two permanent telemetred seismological stations were installed at 0.8 km east of crater and 1.5 km north-east of Cráter-2 station. Those stations are equipped with broad-band seismometer, three components.

Ground deformations

The deformation network at Galeras volcano consists of two electronic tilmeters, one electronic tilmeter portable and eight short level lines. These stations cover the northeast flank of the volcano.

Geochemistry

The geochemical monitoring at Galeras, Cumbal and Azufral volcanoes include measurements as :

· gases from soils at volcano’s edifice;

· gases from fumaroles;

· chemical components of hot springs and well.

On Galeras volcano are 21 stations for monitoring Radon-222 and CO2, emitted from soils. Actually, there is a clasification of all waters of thermal springs, locales within a radio of 8.0 km from the volcano’s craters. Monitoring of acid and permanent gases from fumaroles is carryed out using correlation spectrometry and gas-cromatography methods.
