1998-99 Interscholastic Report, University of Arkansas

The University of Arkansas School of Law Board of Advocates'
interscholastic teams had an exciting and successful year.
The Arkansas Negotiations team of Daniel Mallory and Gina Smith won First
Place in the Southwest Regional Negotiations Competition, hosted in November by
Southern Methodist University in Dallas.  Mallory and Smith, coached by Professors
Tim Tarvin and Judith Kilpatrick, went on to participate in the National Negotiations
Competition at the Mid-Year Meeting of the American Bar Association in Los Angeles.
The Arkansas Trial Team also met with success, in January, when James
Estes and Collin Kennedy defeated a team from UALR in the Henry C. Woods
Trial Competition, sponsored by ABODA, in Little Rock.  This success followed an
enhanced commitment to the Arkansas Trial competition program, inspired by Professor
John Watkins, Ben J. Altheimer Professor of Advocacy; Fayetteville attorneys
John Everett, and Woody Bassett; and faculty coordinator Kim Coats.
The Arkansas Appellate Moot Court program continued its strong tradition with
another successful year. Erin Royston and Murray Wells, coached by Professor
Kim Coats, were finalists in the National Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition at
the University of San Diego in October.
Jill Keenom, Tom Buchanan, and Steve Maddex, coached by Professor
Kathryn Sampson, advanced to the Final Four in the Regional Rounds of the National
Moot Court Competition, hosted by the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in November.
In February, Collin Kennedy, Brian Henry, and James Clark, coached by
Professor Frank Bozzo, advanced to the quarterfinals of the University
of North Carolina's J. Braxton Craven Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition.
Also in February, Kathy Ridenoure and Hastings Hanshaw, coached by
Professor Kathryn Sampson, advanced to the final round and took second place in the
Ninth Annual National First Amendment Moot Court Competition, hosted by Vanderbilt
University and the First Amendment Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
