Introduction
Spring is a great time to experience rain. Rainfall is important for drinking, eating, and oxygen. Have fun learning more about rain.

Task
Using their prior knowledge the students will make a rain guage to measure how much rain falls over several days. The students will measure the rainfall every day at the same time and record their observations. Students will then construct charts based on observations of rainfall.

Sources
10 Rulers
10 Waterproof markers
25 Plastic containers at least 12 inches high
100 marbles
Water
25 Composition notebooks

Process
  1. Students will place 3 marbles in their container.Student will add water until it is one inch deep.
  2. Using the waterproof marker students will draw a line to show the water level.
  3. Go outside and have each student place their rain guage on a level surface.
  4. At a specific time each day take the students outside to measure the rainfall that has occured for that day.
  5. After observing and measuring have the students go back inside and record their readings and comments in their notebooks.
  6. Record daily for one week.

Guidance
  • At the end of the week the students will get into groups and construct charts based on observations. The charts will include the day, height of water, new rainfall, and overall observation. The groups will share with the class their observations.
  • Guided questions to ask students:
    • Was there any differences with the height of the water?
    • What day did new rainfall occur?
    • What is your overall observation that happened this week?

Conclusion
You have experienced rainfall! You have learned how to make a rain guage, measure rain fall over a period of time, make observations, and create charts. We had a great time and now you are ready to go out and learn more about the exciting spring season!
