CHARLIE B. WHITESIDE, III

Alumnus Charlie B. Whiteside, III Leads Xi Chapter to New Heights

For many years since its founding in 1890, Xi Chapter at the University of Arkansas ranked as one of the premier Kappa Sigma chapters in the country. However, during some difficult times in the late 1970's and in the middle 1980's, Xi experienced some membership and financial issues that challenged their legacy. During these brief times of struggle emerged a dedicated alumnus, civic leader, and prominent investment banker named Charles B. Whiteside, III. Under Charlie's leadership, the Xi Chapter set a series of goals that would be reached in an organized manner. By restructuring the way we rush, developing focus statements and action plans involving accountability, we were able to bring improvements in all aspects of fraternity life. Even today as fraternity life changes, these same objectives are reviewed and modified on an annual basis. With this kind of commitment to organization and discipline, it didn't take long to restore excellence to Xi Chapter. As chapter president, I am convinced that the key to our continued success is the personal involvement and leadership of a dedicated alumnus. It takes a special someone who is willing to take the initiative and give a tremendous amount of personal time and talent. For the men at Xi Chapter, Charlie Whiteside has been that special someone. While attending the Biannual Grand Conclave this summer in Phoenix, Arizona, I heard people from other Kappa Sigma chapters express difficulties and challenges their particular chapters were facing. Upon hearing this, I thought a lot about what could be done to possibility strengthen those chapters. This is, in part, what encouraged me to write this article. My advice to those chapters and alumni who are in need of help restructuring the organization of their houses would be to call upon the leadership and expertise of Charlie Whiteside. He has unparalleled knowledge in an area that few have. Ask him for direction and assistance. Invite him to share his motivational and organizational leadership expertise with your alumni. He is a secret worth sharing. The other reason as to why I am writing this article is to say - on behalf of the men at Xi chapter, thank you, Charlie Whiteside. Your help and dedication had helped make a difference in shaping many lives. The men of Xi will forever be grateful to you. You represent the ideals of a true Kappa Sigma. You exemplify what it means to be a Kappa Sigma.
