buffalo river
october, 1996

Picture these trees submerged in a lake and dead. Picture the lake shore far above littered with refuse and condos. We have Dr. Neil Compton, among many others, to thank that this vista was not lost. Dr. Compton led the fight in the 1960s to have the Buffalo declared the nation's first National River, thereby saving it from being dammed (or damned, either word is equally appropriate) and the area flooded and turned into just another stinking reservoir.

Thank you, Dr. Compton, may you rest in peace, what a difference you made.
