SAE Collegiate Design Series: Formula SAE®
Electronic Throttle Control (ETC)
2001 Noise
Test Engine Speeds This information is being published per
Section 3.5.5.3.(a) of the 2001 Formula SAE Rules.
It has come to our attention that some FSAE teams may be
considering the use of Electronic Throttle Controls (ETC). Such
systems are only now appearing on production passenger cars, as
making an ETC system safe is a very complex challenge.
The FSAE Rules have been written assuming a mechanical (e.g. a
cable) actuated throttle control system, and as such do not
adequately cover ETC. While we do not wish to curb the creativity of
the teams, the safety of everyone involved must be our prime
concern.
Checking out the safety aspects of an ETC system will be very
time consuming, and would take too much time in Tech. Inspection at
the event. Also, we have no wish for any team to arrive at the
competition, and then be sent away because they have a system that
we cannot approve and they have no way to rectify the problem(s) in
the available time.
Therefore, we need to approve any proposed ETC system WELL BEFORE
the competition. We need to have:
- Information on the mechanical and electrical components of the
system, and
- The flow charts/logic diagrams for the software.
We need these items well in advance of the competition. We will
have some of our industry experts review them, and have you make any
necessary changes before you arrive at the Silverdome. Please send
them to Kathleen McDonald. She will forward them to the relevant
people for review.
