The vertical displacement (v) within each element is described by a cubic displacement function. The 4 constant terms of the cubic function allow for the inclusion of all four degrees of freedom for the element (a vertical displacement and a rotation at each node). The cubic equation is shown below, where the constant term () represents the vertical displacement at the node closest to the origin.
