Degrees of Freedom

Degrees of freedom is defined as the number of independent coordinates necessary to specify the configuration of a system. The degrees of freedom for a general situation consists of three translations in the x, y, and z directions and three rotations about the x, y, and z axes. A one-dimensional beam element has four degrees of freedom, which include, a vertical displacement

and a rotation

at each node.
