My Friends.....
I have been meeting a lot of friends throughout the years in United States. This picture was taken during Monika's birthday (the girl in blue). She was an exchange student from Germany, and now she is finishing her degree in Biochemistry.
I met Miwa during my junior year in high school, whom was also an exchange student from Japan. She went back to Tokyo after a year of study, and she was my very first Japanese friend. Speaking of Japanese, I always find its language and culture interesting. Unfortunately, WPI does not offer courses in Japanese language, so I decided to learn Japanese at Clark University. I do experience some general differences between WPI and Clark University, such as study environments, atmosphere, etc. Most of the students there have liberal arts majors, and it is very interesting to discuss ideas with them as they are more diversified. It is indeed pretty sad that I will be leaving them after graduation, espeically John and Alex, whom I met ever since my first year of Japanese. Here is a picture of my Japanese class, with Professor Aoki.
I am also involved with the Big Brothers/Sisters program; I
think it is very meaningful to spend time with little kids from
elementary school. Unfortunately, some of these kids came from
broken family, and my "little brother" was one of them
(name withheld). He was in his sixth grade when I first met him,
it was funny that people thought I was "babysitting"
him. It really wasn't babysitting, rather we spent time and had
fun together. And of course he became my youngest
friend. ![]()
I also met a lot of friends through Inter-Colleiagate Asian Student Council (ICASC) - it is an organization which consists of members from MIT, Harvard, Wellesley College, Tufts University, Northeastern University, Boston University, and WPI. One of its main purposes is to serve as a bridge, providing information about upcoming events in between colleges. I was one of the officers during the year of 94-95, and I enjoy working with people from different schools. As a matter of fact, we successfully organized a large-scale fashion show, several dance parties and some other activities in Boston.
During the summer of 95, I was one of the participants of the REU program at Boston University. I had a really great time there! Most of the REU students were from Massachusette, but there were people from other parts of the country, like Maryland and Floria. I had an opportunity to work with Gunaji, a graduate student from Boston University, on his project. And our mentor was Professor Madanshetty, who is an expert in microcavitation and experimental acoustics engineering.
And during last summer, I was working at Space System/Loral in
California. I miss that place so much, and of course I met some
friends from Loral - I worked very closely with Mr. Randy Pon, a
senior engineer in thermal engineering section. Also I would like
to mention Mr. Chris Goodman, our section supervisor, who is very
knowledgable in the field. I really learned a lot from them. And
surprisingly, two of the acquaintances (Mike and Ignasio) in my
section were graduated from WPI! ![]()
I also have friends in Hong Kong, some of them have moved to Canada. Most of my friends in Hong Kong are studying at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). They always remind me of my childhood - if I finally receive pictures from them I will post them here.
