CLIMATE AND CLOTHING
Erratic would
be the best word to describe the
weather here in Fayetteville.
Be sure to get an umbrella (you
can actually get one here) and
a good rainjacket that you'll
probably need to use all year
around. The summers can get quite
hot with temperatures around the
low 90's(Fahrenheit, equivalent
to 30s in Centigrade), with the
hottest months being August and
September. Jeans, shorts and T-shirts
would be the best for the summers.
The winter temperatures are usually
around the low 50's ( 5 to 10
degrees Centigrade), but it can
get really cold compared to what
you may be used to. So do come
armed with winter clothes. A very
famous saying here is "If
you don't like the climate today,
just wait for a day". Most
students prefer to buy them here,
as they may be too bulky to carry
from home. You definitely need
some good leather shoes during
the cold season. Leather shoes
are quite expensive here so get
a good pair from home. Chappals
or sandals would be a good idea
for the summer.
Fayetteville has four distinct
seasons, the Fall and the Spring
being the other two. Fall is a
really pretty season to be here
during, with all the leaves that
turn color and fall. Spring is
really picturesque, especially
just to see the freshness of new
leaves and flowering buds. If
you have never seen snowfall,
then you will enjoy the winter
coz yes, it does snow here and
a decent amount if you are lucky.
On-Campus Jobs
You can look around for on-campus jobs once you get here and it shouldn't be too hard to find one. Most students find part-time employment in the campus dining centers, tutoring centers, computer labs and as residence hall desk workers, among others. The pay ranges from $6.25 to $10 or $12 an hour and you are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week.
Insurance
Do get your eyes and teeth checked
before you come here because eye
and dental care are not covered
by most insurance policies and
they turn out to be quite expensive.
If you wear glasses or contact
lenses, then do bring an extra
pair.
Everyone is required to buy a
health insurance. If you need
to get measles /MMR vaccinations,
you can get them for free at the
University Health Center during
Orientation.
