Key Events 2005
- Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (April 23rd) Race for the Cure applications are now available in the Golden Key office, and they due back in the office by March 18, the Friday before spring break. GK has received some funding for this event, so the normal $20 entry fee will be reduced according to how many people join the team. We plan to make special t-shirts for all participants. This is a very fun event, and a great way to help out the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
- Information Tables (March 17) In front of the Union food court. We will sell honor cords for $15 each, pass out applications for Race for the Cure, and spread the word about Golden Key.
- Valentine's Day Goody Bags (Deadline: February 13) We will put together goody bags for our honorary members and distribute them on Valentine’s Day. We will collect donations of bags of candy, ribbon, and other decorating supplies, and points will be awarded for donations. We will meet to assemble the bags Sunday, February 13 in the Northwest Quad lobby (Building B) at 4 pm. Come help us out by helping assemble bags or delivering them on Valentine's Day.
- Valentine's Day Baskets for Nursing Home Residents (Deadline: February 12) We will be collecting lotion, tissues, denture cleansing tablets, cross-words, and valentine’s candy in order to prepare Valentine’s Day baskets for residents of Butterfield Trail Village Residential Care Facility. We hope to collect enough to make 50 baskets. Points will be awarded for donations. We will meet to assemble and deliver the baskets on Saturday, February 12 in the lobby of the Northwest Quad (Building B) at 1 pm. We will deliver the baskets at 3 pm. Don't forget to bring by donations!
- Honor Cord Sale Golden Key is now selling honor cords for $15 each. Stop by the Golden Key office in the union during one of our office hours to pick yours up!
- Service project for Camp Boggy Creek (Through February 24) As a part of the Orlando conference, we will be collecting games, puzzles, or decks of cards for Camp Boggy Creek. This is a facility for children between the ages of 7-16 with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. It allows them to spend a week for FREE at the camp as a nice getaway, and helps them to cope with the day-to-day challenges that come with their illnesses. We will accept donations in our office during office hours and will be awarding 3 points for a donation.
- January Golden Key Chapter Meeting (January 25) The chapter officers introduced themselves to the members, the points system and scholarships were discussed, we talked about upcoming events for the semester, and gave away T-shirts.
2004
- New Member Induction Ceremony (Giffels Auditorium in Old Main, starting at 3:30pm on Nov. 14, 2004) New members received their certificates, the Golden Key chapter undergraduate scholarship was awarded, and Dr. Suzanne McCray was our guest speaker.
- Childrens Book Drive (September 20 - October 15) We will be collecting new or "gently used" books for children ages 0-10 years. Please help out the Women's Shelter by bringing books to the Golden Key office in the Union. Be sure to leave your name on the donation or email us to make sure you get points.
- September Golden Key Chapter Meeting (September 30) Join us for the first chapter meeting of the new year. We will be meeting in the atrium of the Reynolds Center at 6:30pm to eat pizza and visit before moving to the auditorium at 7pm to here Athletic Director Frank Broyles speak about "The History of Arkansas Football". Razorback door prizes will be given out.
- Cells for Seniors (September 1-30) Cells for Seniors is a program that provides senior citizens with a cell phone and charger with minimal service (911, for example) free of charge. If you or someone you know has switched phones recently, bring the old phone and charger to the Golden Key office, located on the sixth floor of the Union, or you can drop it off at any Russell cellular location. If you do the latter, be sure to email us so we can give you points. For more information, contact Shelley Baird.
- Graduation Flower Sales (May 8: 7am-5pm) We are having our annual flower sale during commencement ceremonies, Saturday, May 8 from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the commencement ceremonies. Golden Key will be selling full dozen and half dozen bouquets of roses for $25.00 and $15.00. Proceeds will go towards Golden Key activities and scholarships.
- "Spring Cleaning" Drive for 7 Hills Homeless Shelter (Deadline: May 8) Help out the local homeless shelter by donating:
- men's jeans in GOOD condition (esp. 29"-33")
- men's and women's track shoes (GOOD condition)
- zip-up sweatshirts
- new women's briefs; GOOD used bras
- men's and women's new socks (white)
- boy's clothing 1-6 years
- blankets
- towels and washcloths
- table lamps
- student-size desks
- upright chairs
- dressers
- Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (April 24th) Golden Key will not have its own team, but several members will be there. Come out and support this cause if you can.
- Friday Night Live Wordigo Tournament (April 23: 9pm-12am) Golden Key is hosting a Wordigo tournament. This is in conjunction with Friday Night Live. Wordigo is a fast paced word game similar to Scrabble. First place winners receive $25, second place winners recieve a free Razorback t-shirt, third place winners receive a gift certificate to RZs. Friday Night Live will have several other activities, with food, games, and chances to win some great prizes. Don't miss this event!!
- April Golden Key Chapter Meeting (April 22: 7pm-8pm) Dr. Ed Mink, Director of the Health Center, will speak on managing stress during finals. We will also award 3 scholarships and hand out t-shirts to those who have earned five or more points this semester. SENIORS: we will have honor cords on hand for purchase. They are $15 each. And, as always, free pizza and drinks. Please don't miss this event!!!
- Sophomore Recognition (April 15: 7pm-10pm) We are having a party for the sophomore students in the top 15% of their class. They will be our future members, so come meet them and stay to watch A Beautiful Mind. Subway sandwiches, drinks, and cookies will be provided.
- Information Tables (March 31 and April 1: 10am-3pm) Come by and see us in front of the Union food court as we try to raise awareness for Golden Key and advertise Sophomore Recognition.
- March Golden Key Chapter Meeting (March 25: 7:30pm) Philip Zweig, creator of Wordigo, will speak this new popular, fast-paced word game and us how to play!!! This is in preparation for next month's Wordigo tournament, an event Golden Key is hosting with Friday Night Live. If you want to check it out, the website is www.wordigo.com. Free Pizza and Drinks will be available and upcoming events will be discussed. All members are encouraged to come, play a few rounds of Wordigo and enjoy free food!
- Habitat for Humanity Build Day (March 6: 8am-4pm) Golden Key will be having a build day for Habitat for Humanity. More information to come.
- Bowl for Kid’s Sake (March 4, 2004: 9-11pm) Come join us in a team bowling (4-5 participants) fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters. You can either join an existing team or start your own. Each bowler needs a pledge sheet with a $10 pledge from at least 10 people or $5 pledge from at least 20 friends/family. Those collecting $100 get a free t-shirt. - February Golden Key Chapter Meeting (February 26, 2004) We will be having our second chapter meeting Thursday at 7:00 pm in BA 202. We be giving updates on the Valentine's Day project as well as providing information on upcoming projects. We will also be electing a new Public Relations officer.
- Valentine's Day Baskets (Deadline: February 7,2004) Golden Key is collecting items to put together gift baskets to give to nursing home residents on Valentine’s Day. Please help us out by donating lotion, Kleenex, denture cleansing tablets, crossword and wordsearch puzzles, hand-held games, sugar free candy, other V-day candy, etc. Donations can be made in the Golden Key office, located on the sixth floor of the Union until Febraury 7. The officers will be putting baskets together during office hours, so please come by and help if you can. Also, we will be assembling baskets as a group on Friday (2/6/04) from 3pm to 4:30pm in the office. Come help us in making deliveries the weekend of Feb. 14.
- January Golden Key Chapter Meeting (January 28, 2004) The first Chapter meeting of the Spring semester will be held in WCOB 202 at 7:30 pm. We will give updates on December projects and information on our new service projects. Come and find out about Golden Key Scholarships and the how the recipients are chosen while eating Eureka Pizza. Barbara Batson from the Career Development Center will speak on “What Employers are Looking For.”
- Christmas Toy Drive (Deadline: December 15, 2003) The Toy drive, which benefited Leverett and Asbell Elementary Schools, collected 29 items.
- The Book/Magazine drive (Deadline: December 12, 2003) The Book/Magazine drive, which benefited American troops in Iraq, collected over 350 books and magazines.
