Major morphological characters of protostelids and protostelid-like ameboid protoctists. Stages not drawn to scale because morphology, not size, is important. Modified from: F.W. Spiegel "Phylum Plasmodial Slime Molds Class Protostelida" in Handbook of Protoctista g-j Eumycetozoa incerta sedis: G1 sporocarp of Protosteliopsis fimicola, spore nondeciduous; G2 ameba of P. fimicola, note large contractile vauole; H1, sporocarp of Microglomus paxillus with four cells in spore; H2, ameba of M. paxillus; J1-2, hydrated and nonhydrated sporocarps of Echinostelopsis oligospora, spores deciduous; J3 protoplasmodium of E. oligospora, note multiple nucleoli in nuclei.
