U OF A CLASSICS TEAM VICTORIOUS AT NATIONAL CONVENTION
Richmond, Virginia:
April 3, 1998
A team made up of four Classics majors from the University of
Arkansas won the "Certamen" at the annual national convention of Eta Sigma
Phi,
the Classical Studies undergraduate honors society. The "Certamen"
is a College-Bowl-type competition that tests student knowledge of Greek
and Latin culture, literature, language, art, philosophy, and history.
Fifteen teams competed in the event.
The U of A student team includes undergraduate Classical Studies
majors Brandon Bolinger, Matthew Harrington, Maggie Smith, and Megan
Tynan. At the same convention, Ms. Smith was elected to the national
office of Megas Chrysophylax (Executive Treasurer) of Eta Sigma Phi.
This was the 70th annual Eta Sigma Phi convention, hosted by
chapters at the University of Richmond, Hampden-Sydney College, and
Randolph-Macon College. Chapters from every corner of the United States
were in attendance. Next year's convention will be at the University of
Georgia in Athens.
In 1995, the University of Arkansas hosted the national
convention. The local U of A chapter of Eta Sigma Phi was chartered on
May 30, 1950. The organization was founded at the University of Chicago
in 1914, and was nationalized in 1924. The purposes of Eta Sigma Phi are
three:
1) To develop and promote interest in classical study among the students
of colleges and universities;
2) To promote closer fraternal relationship among students who are
interested in classical study, including inter-campus relationship.
3) To engage generally in an effort to stimulate interest in classical
study, and in the history, art, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.
Faculty Advisors for the U of A chapter are Professors Dave
Fredrick and Daniel Levine.
