Narrowcasting
Narrowcasting sends information to a specific list of recipients whereas broadcasting sends information to a wide range of recipients. Some examples of narrowcasting are listservs, blogs, wikis, rss, and podcasting.
The internet uses a combination of broadcasting and narrowcasting. Most Web sites are on a broadcast model since anyone with Internet access can view them. Sites that require log-in are based more on the narrowcast model. Push technologies which send information to subscribers are another form of narrowcasting.
In higher education, narrowcasting allows students to participate in the creation of content rather than simply consume information delivered by technology. This increases motivation and collaboration.
