Best Free Stuff for eLearning
If you're learning or teaching from a distance with limited resources, there are a number of free resources to help you out. You'll notice that a number of these are portable applications, meaning they do not install system files and therefore can be installed on and run from a flashdrive or other portable storage; This can be useful for people who working on public computers or where they do not have permission to install software. Here are some of my top free picks:
Applications for Productivity
- CourseLab (Windows)
free eLearning authoring tool, rich in features but will not operate on Macintosh, still a great product - CutePDF Writer
Application allows you save almost any type of printable document as a PDF file, no watermarks or popup ads
- Gimp Portable graphics editor
Graphics application with many advanced features, a portable application - OpenOffice
Full-featured multiplatform office suite (PC, Mac, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD), compatible with Microsoft Office (also see Open Office portable version that you can store on your jumpdrive), includes a "save as pdf" feature - ZamZar (file conversion)
If you've ever needed to convert a file into a different format (up to 100 mb), this site is for you. Just browse for you file, select the type you want to convert to, enter your email address, and you will receive the new file. To convert larger files up to 1 GB, just register with the site (free).

Ecto is a hosted, open networked Personal Learning Environment. This learning management system is built on the principles and architecture of social software. Students, as well as instructors, can add content. While the basics are free, Ecto has recently added a paid feature, in collaboration with AT&T — live conferencing with AT&T Connect—enabling integrated voice, web and video conferencing from the community and group dashboards.

Innovate focuses on the creative use of information technology to enhance education and training in academic, commercial, and governmental settings. Webcasts are free and archived. - EASI's Online Conferences
EASI is a provider of online training on accessible information technology for persons with disabilities. In addition to paid webinars and an online certificate program, this group offers many good FREE webinars focuses on accessibility issues.
