So, what do I do, in brief?

I am a Professor Emeritus of Rural Sociology at the University of Arkansas.  Prior to my retirement in May of 2002, I had responsibilities in all three areas of Teaching, Research, and Extension. My major area of responsibility was Community and Rural Development. I also have experience in survey research; evaluation research, farming systems and other participatory research and development; development project design, implementation, and evaluation, sustainable agriculture; small farm issues; and Southeast Asian Studies. During the last 10 years of my professional career at the University of Arkansas, I became involved with the Ouachita National Forest's Ecosystem Management program, and chaired its Ecosystem Management Advisory Committee for five years. At that point I became active in the social aspects of natural resource management, focusing especially upon forestry and the USDA Forest Service. I worked on several projects which focused upon community-based strategies for forest planning and management. I also recovered my long-term interest and expertise in Southeast Asia, organizing workcamps in Viet Nam in cooperation with Peacework of Blacksburg, VA and the Viet Nam YMCA and serving as a consultant to an education system reform project with colleagues at Can Tho University and Michigan State University.  Since retirement I have continued to advise graduate students at the University of Arkansas in the new Public Policy Ph. D. program, am on the faculty of the new Clinton School of Public Service, and to work with Habitat for Humanity.
