Dave's Science Fiction Ramblings

Science Fiction books and movies can typically be separated into 3 basic categories:

The good

Star Wars
Star Wars should be considered the cool crowd's sci-fi movie of choice.
When Star Wars came out in 1977 it was unheard of for a Sci-fi movie to gross more
than any other movie ever made. Even more surprising was how it brought together
so many generations to the point where it is almost impossible to find an
American adult or child that is not at least somewhat familiar with Star Wars.

Doctor Who
Some might disagree that the Doctor and his time traveling ilk belong among
"the good" at all, but for those that can see past the sometimes extreme
campiness of the series it can offer some enlightenment on human nature and
is just all around fun. By the way, If you already knew that TARDIS stands for
"Time And Relative Dimensions In Space" then you probably wasted as much of
your youth in front of a TV as I did :)

The bad

Star Trek
I realize the trekkies will probably put out a hit on me for this one, but Star Trek is
90% ewok droppings as far as I am concerned. The supposed science behind it is faulty,
they always seem to fall back on self-destruct options, and Han Solo could totally kick
Kirk's ass any day of the week. And really, even guys like Greedo and Jabba look macho
next to "Q" who is supposed to be some sort of ultimate being. And what's with the Borg
anyway? R2-D2 could deactivate the whole lot of them from any data terminal in about 5 minutes.

The (really) ugly

Pretty much anything by Roger Corman
Good ol' Roger. If there's an almost dead horse, he'll beat it. If there's a cliche' he'll use it.
And if there's a way to make a quick buck off the often gullible sci-fi fans, he's there quicker than
P.T. Barnum. Use the link above to view some of his illustrious credits, such as Watchers Reborn.
It takes an otherwise great book from Dean Koontz and makes it into a completely twisted adaptation with
Mark Hamill playing the lead. Aaarrgh!
