ANNOUNCEMENTS:

*The Rorty reading scheduled for 9/22 has been dropped and replaced by the selection from John Hospers called “An Argument Against Skepticism”.

*COPY OF EMAIL NOTICE SENT WEDNESDAY 9/30:

Dear class,

While reviewing my notes for tomorrow's lecture I noticed that the Churchland article is very dense with information and I think it will be difficult to cover all of this article in one class.  I also noticed that I left an important reading from David Chalmers off of the syllabus.  In order to deal with these issues, I am making the following changes:

1.  For Thurs. 10/1:  We will cover pages 290-300 of the Churchland article (the sections on Reductive Materialism and Functionalism)

2.  For Tues.  10/6:  We will finish the Churchland article (pp. 300-304) and will discuss the short Chalmers article on Property Dualism (pp. 323-325)

3.  For Thurs. 10/8:  We will discuss Thomas Nagel's "What is it like to Be a Bat?" and use any leftover time for review.

4.  We will not read John Searl's article on computationalism.

5.  Our first EXAM will be on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13th (as per the syllabus).  You will need to bring a bluebook!

Basically I am dropping the Searl article in favor of the Chalmers article.  This means that you will be reading about 4 less pages than originally planned.

I will give you a "review sheet" in class on Thursday, Oct. 6th to help you study for the exam.

Please note the make-up policy on the syllabus.  If you cannot make the exam on 10/13 you must let me know in advance.  Students who miss the exam w/o prior notification will receive an automatic zero.
