One of the many experiences the tech gave me was to be involved in charities.  I was chairman of the Charitable Causes Committee in both years of the sixth form and wrote articles in the annual school magazine about it.  “Fund raising should be fun raising”, I wrote.

We organized all sorts of events, from handing out cardboard piggy banks, weekly penny collections, collecting aluminum cans and milk bottle caps, and stalls at school events.  And we organized 25 mile walks for Oxfam. Walks were all the rage at the time, mostly to protest the nuclear bomb or war, but we marched for Oxfam.  Actually, I never marched myself, but I persuaded many friends and even my poor brother.
