In 1966 I was too old to go on holiday with my
family. I was seventeen. They went to the Channels Islands, Jersey,
and did the normal things our family did on holiday. They saw the sights. They
learned about the places they visited.
Alone at home, half way through the week, I decided to
surprise my parents by redecorating the front room. They had wanted to do it for some time and had bought the
supplies. I repapered the walls, and I
painted the trim in a dark shade of pink.
It looked good.
Mum and dad were
overwhelmed with joy when they returned.
I felt good. I was grown up and
I my parents knew how I felt about them.
Three days later, a letter came from the railway telling us that the
house was going to be demolished and we had to move to 86 Buckland Road. The joy I wanted to bring them simply added
to my parents’ dismay.
