1963, Our holiday in Rhyll, North Wales

After the West Country, it was decided that our next holiday would be in north Wales.  There was intense discussion about which town, and we settled for Rhyll.  We toured the region, coach tours mainly – to give Dad a break from trains.  Fascinating small Welsh villages with unpronounceable names and quaint stories.  The extraordinary castles.  The coast towns.  The mountains.

I had to search for the identity of the castle in these pictures on the internet and found that a few years after our visit it was derelict.  Only recently has been rescued from complete decay through a campaign led by a 12-year old.

Mum and Dad loved holidays in caravans.  They were supposed to be much cheaper than hotels, they protected Mum from the upper classes that made her so nervous, but mostly they let Mum be in control.  She was in control of what we ate and when we ate, and how we lived.  Pictures of caravans, usually in attractive coastal settings, are common in her albums.
