From
the photographs in our two albums, it seems that Mum was interested in the family
and camping, I was interested in the sites.
When
we turned into teenagers, days-out were not enough and Mum and Dad booked
two-week holidays outside the southeast.
First came Devon, Goodrington, near Paignton, and a campsite separated
from the sea by a railway line with steam trains. The steam trains were not part of British Railways, but a ride
for tourists. We also booked coach
tours, to Exeter, Dartmoor, and Torquay.
On the Dartmoor tour the driver told a joke about a colleague of his who
spared a bee who had got caught in his wipers.
When out of petrol in the middle of no where, the bee came to his rescue
by filling his petrol tank with BP.
That’s one of my memories from the Devon holiday.
