I had been at the school two years when Malcolm came.  Few passed the 11-plus at my infants school.  There were just three of us in my year, and none went to the Grammar.  We all went to “the tech”; Maidstone Technical School for Boys. Half way through my time there, it became Maidstone Technical High School for Boys (very American, and we were so proud) and shortly after I left it became Oakwood Park Grammar School.  But then it was “the tech”.  I got a good education there, especially in the sciences.  But there were a host of other activities, from student-run clubs (like the science and astronomy clubs), school-wide fund raising efforts like fetes and plays (including the fantastic Christmas review), and the was Award Day.  The Head Master was keen on sports and “school spirit” but I never saw the point of all that.  But the school treated me well and I was one of the third or fourth students to go on to University.
