1957- Life in Hart Street, Maidstone

It was in about 1957 that we became curious about the physiological differences between boys and girls and Lorraine educated us, many times.  Miriam found out and joined in.  When curiosity changed to something more serious – and Lorraine developed buds that were to become breasts - we moved away from such things.  But fond memories remain, memories that were stirred in the sweetest way by the film “Hope and Glory”.

Jenny was a girl our age who lived round the corner on Hart Street at Wallis’s Construction yard.  Her father was the watchman there.  We would occasionally play in the yard.  There were disused buses and lorries, and a spooky cellar, which had a large double door to the river.  You can just about make out the Wallis name on the door in one of the photographs.
