There
were lots of things we liked about Dad working on the railway, the excitement, the
connection with the rest of the country, the number of rail trips we took to
exciting places, the railway outings with seaside, friends, beer and
songs. Then there were the Christmas
Parties, usually in the dining hall of Foster Clark’s. Planning started months before, with sums of
money placed in an account, presents bought and hidden, dressing up smartly,
lots of food and laughter, games, presents, beer, and a Punch and Judy show.
