Outing to Brighton

There
were lots of things we liked about Dad working on the railway. We loved living next door to the railway
yards. It was exciting. We heard about roads of rail going all over
the country. And exciting things
arrived, liked circuses, and we got to watch the unloadings. Most of all, Dad got free or cheap rail
tickets and every other weekend we went somewhere, somewhere fun, like the
coast, or somewhere neat, like London and all those castles and museums. There were the outings to the coast,
organized by the railway, seaside, friends, beer and songs. We boarded a coach, in the green and cream
livery of Maidstone and District buses and a logo I can still remember, with
the boot loaded with crates of beer, soft-drinks and crisps (potato
chips). On the way home, we stopped for
beer, and sang all the way, loud, confident, happy, and knowing that these
friendships would last forever.
