1964 Holiday in Porthcawl, near Bridgend, South Wales

In 1964 I was almost sixteen, old enough to take a holiday without my parents, old enough for a girlfriend.  I went to Porthcawl, with my cousin Roger and his family.  I had heard so much about it, the holidays at Porthcawl that Roger and Lorraine took.  Usually they involved the opposite sex.  I stared at girls, and at one point something nearly happened.  But I chickened out as they approached to say hello.  I looked the other way.  And I missed my parents.  As a consequence I bought them a huge gift, which they never knew what to do with.  It was a porcelain container for rum, with tiny mugs to drink from, in the shape of a sea captain.

The following year, Mum and Dad came too, but I am not sure they liked it very much.
