Energy Ch 6

Topic 1 Impulse

(a)    Define impulse.

(b)   Define momentum.

(c)    Rearrange Newton's 2nd law in terms of impulse and momentum.

Topic 2 Conservation of Momentum

Given Newton's laws of motion, show that momentum must be conserved in any interaction.

Topic 3 Bootstrap Machines

Discuss the feasibility of a device that lifts itself up by it's own bootstraps.

Examples

A golf club imparts a force F on a golf ball of mass m, giving it a velocity of v. For what time is the club in contact with the ball?

A tennis ball of mass m and a basketball of mass M are dropped together, with the tennis ball on top and directly above the basketball. If the basketball were dropped alone, it would bounce back to a height H, but with the tennis ball above it, it only bounces back to a height h.  To what will the tennis ball fly?
