Topic 1 Magnifier
(a) Show that angular magnification of a simple magnifier is the
ratio of the near point of the human eye to the focal length of the
lens.
(b) Show that the maximum linear magnification of a simple magnifier
is the angular magnification plus one.
Topic 2 Telescopes
(a) Show that the magnification of an astronomical telescope is the
ratio of the focal length of the objective to the focal length of the
eyepiece.
(b) Diagram a Galilean telescope.
Examples
The magnifications of a simple magnifier demonstrated in class will
be calculated.
The focal lengths of the objective and eyepiece of
an inexpensive prism binocular will be measured and the magnification
will be calculated.
