2 Exam I 06

Topic 1 Kirchhoff's Laws

(a) State Kirchhoff's junction theorem and explain how it is related to the conservation of charge.

(b) State Kirchhoff's loop theorem and explain how it is related to the conservation of energy.

Topic 2 Terminal Voltage

What is meant by the internal resistance of a battery?

Topic 3 Simple Circuits

Derive from Kirchhoff's Laws the rules for adding resistances in

(a) Series

(b) Parallel

Examples

Four 8 ohm speakers are to connected to a car radio. What is the maximum and minimum impedance (equivalent resistance) of the circuits? For what arrangement is the impedance of the circuit the same as for a single speaker?

If light bulbs were ohmic, what would be the resistance of (a) two 100 W light bulbs wired in series and (b) a 40 W bulb in series with a 100 W bulb. We will see which bulb will light the brightest in each case.
