Topic 1 Boltzmann's Constant

Define Boltzmann's constant and tell why it is important.

Topic 2 Molecular Pressure

Describe qualitatively the Kinetic Theory of Gasses.

Examples

Given that the gas constant R, as measured by many a freshman chemistry student, is 8.31 J/mole.K and Boltzmann’s constant k from the law of atmospheres is 1.38 x 10-23 J/molecule.K, what is the number of molecules per mole?
(Avogadro suggested such a number existed in 1811, but Lord Kelvin, for whom we name the temperature scale,  did not believe it he said until he read Einstein’s paper in 1905.)

If one mole of nitrogen has a mass of 28 g (two atoms per molecule) and a volume of 22.4 L at 273o K and 1 atmosphere of pressure, 101 kPa, what is the average speed of a molecule? How does this compare to the speed of sound?
