Examples

A "slug" is the unit of mass in the old English units of measure using pounds, feet and seconds in place of kilograms, meters and seconds in the SI system of units we use in this course. Pounds in the English system is a unit of weight, where a kilogram weighs 2.205 lb. A "slug" in the English system is the amount of mass that will be accelerated at exactly one foot per second squared by a force of one pound. Given that the acceleration due to gravity in the English system is 32 ft/s/s, as opposed to 9.8 m/s/s, what, in pounds, does a slug of whisky weigh? What, in pounds, is a Newton of force?

Fletcher's trolley is the given name (I once heard) of a machine consisting of a cart of mass M on a horizontal frictionless surface being accelerated by the weight of a mass m hanging from a string passing over a pulley and tied to the cart. What is the acceleration of the cart? 

A bricklayer of mass m finds himself being hoisted by a barrel of bricks of mass M when attempting to let the bricks down from a worksite by pulley. What is the acceleration of the bricklayer?
