LATIN 1.S2
MWF 8:45-9:35
Allen 226
Office: 016 Social Sciences
Office hours: WF 9:45-10:45
Objectives: To develop a basic
understanding and knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax.
Workload: Regular translation and composition,
plus memorization and drill. We will go over most homework
in class, but occasionally I may have you turn in an
assignment. Each unit has drill exercises that you can use
if you find them helpful. As in learning any foreign
language, the material is cumulative, and requires, in
addition to doing practice exercises and learning new
material, constant review of older material. It is
recommended that you spend at least 60 minutes a day
working on Latin.
Book: The textbook for this class is Latin: An
Intensive Course, by Moreland & Fleischer,
University of California Press, ISBN 0520031830. It will be
available in the bookstore, but feel free to order the book
from Amazon or another online source.
Quizzes and Exams: There will be fairly
regular quizzes throughout the semester to test your
knowledge of vocabulary, forms, and grammar. These quizzes
will be cumulative, so do not be surprised to find material
from earlier chapters on them. There will not be a midterm,
but there will be a final exam at the time set by the
registrar.
Grading: The quizzes and the final will
each count for 50% of your final grade. However, because
the material is cumulative, if your final exam grade is
higher than your average quiz grade, I will simply make it
your final grade.
Attendance: Regular attendance is
important. If you need to miss class, please email me in
advance and arrange to go over the material covered that
day with one of your classmates. See the official Trinity
College policy here. If you miss more than three classes
without a legitimate excuse such as a serious illness or
religious observance, I will deduct half a mark from
your final grade. Please arrive at class on time as well
- more than three instances of tardiness will also
result in your final grade being lowered by half a mark.
