BIBLIOGRAPHIC PRACTICUM
Biology 2001, Fall 2004 in progress - last update: 11/29/04 HAPPY
THANKSGIVING
NOTE FOR FINAL BIBLIOGRAPHY
For those still confused -
If you have a journal article literally in your hands [your prof gave it
to you, you are physically in the stacks or current journal room looking
at the journal, or you copied the article from an electronic J;
you do not need to give the source as in my note -
**SUCH AS: WebSpirs database
http://vir.sgmjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/85/5/1339 Accessed 2004
Oct 21.
However, the above type of notation [begining with http...] IS necessary
if your citation is from a search engine that you accessed via UAF Library
page under - Electronic Resources & Databases. As part of the citation, it
would be indented as are the multiple lines of the citation.
Turn in completed bibliographies to the labeled box in
BISC mailroom SCEN 632. [They lock up at 5pm.]
Good luck on the successful completion of the semester! Happy Holidays!

Welcome - For course prerequisites, objectives, schedule,
assignments and grading, please see below.
Save a copy for your records.
Entry - 10/29, Nov 1
Comments about your own Assignment 4 will be returned to you via email in
the order that I received them, more-or-less.
Below is a list of common errors and AN IMPORTANT link.
Review this list, view your errors, and be sure you submit your final
bibliography on time with no errors. Duh!
Most of you had the correct formatting [margins, indent, etc] even though
it did not always transfer with email message. (No points were subtracted
from effort unless error significant). Please review these general
comments to ensure that you have not overlooked something.
Common Formatting errors:
failure to indent 2nd and following lines of citation;
failure to leave a blank line between the citation and the annotation;
all lines of type, of a single entry, should be single spaced
[Don't forget to alphabetize all citations and number them sequentially.]
Common Citation errors:
Genus and species should be italicized or underlined;
only 1st wd of title gets capitalized unless genus, proper name, etc.;
no period after J title;
most review series (such as ANN REV) have vol # which should be included;
try to find and to put pp before pages in book or other single citation
5] be sure article in international Js are in English before including
them for web citation - include Accessed before the date u acquired it;
Annotation were generally OK; some grammer and spelling errors-
but MUST** give abstract source [in fact I asked you to do this for all
web accessed sources (BIOSIS, ZOOLOGICAL RECORD, etc.)

10/20 - Mark your calendar*** details for the final BIG assignment will be
covered in class! Be there. No excuses!
Final Bibliography due on or before 12/1/2004
Assignments are given immediately below:
**NEW 10/15**
Important Note about your TOPIC for the final bibliography.
Our last scheduled class meeting is Oct. 20. At this time you will
complete a form concerning your topic and submission of the final
bibliography. It will be important to have a topic that you have made a
reasonable preliminary effort to search. Therefore, try the search
methods you have learned, using your topic (using appropriate key words),
BEFORE Oct 20 in order to evaluate the feasibility of completing the
bibliography on that topic!
If you encounter problems we should reassess the topic.
Begin assignment #4 to help you.
ALSO - Assignments from Ms. Salisbury and others that you have not picked
up in class are in a box outside the door of SCEN 725. They will be
available until 10/22.
BP Assignment #4
This assignment will be due Friday, October 22 [but I advise you not to
leave it to the last moment - early submission will earn 5 extra points].
Follow directions for material to be submitted for a grade.
Objectives:
1] to locate suitable references for your topic. These also will be
included in your final bibliography. Begin this now!
2] to write a precise annotation, on your topic, and receive feedback on
it's appropriateness, clarity and style. This also will be included in
your final bibliography
DIRECTIONS for Assignment #4
PART 1 - Citations [start now but complete after our class on 10/20]
1. Research your topic and determine that you can find and understand
a variety of materials. Titles of articles, books, etc. should
reflect your topic!
Take a look at last year's directions for the final bibliography [link
above on this page] and look at the criteria [it won't change much].
Select citations to include for this exercise; record all information -
(for style - see class notes from 10/20)
2. Locate 5 references that clearly relate to your topic.
a. One must be a book or chapter from a book such as "Annual Review..."
b. One must be a web source that is unquestionably a scientific site…
c. Three must be refereed scientific journal articles.
3. Using WORD or another similar program:
a. Set up a page that has your topic [all caps] as the heading.
b. Under the topic of your bibliography include a subheading -
Citations for Bibliography.
c. Below that subheading, in alphabetical order:
1] Give citations in the prescribed format for the items.
2] The 1st line of each citation goes to the margin; subsequent lines
are each indented 4 spaces.
3] A one-line space goes between each citation.
This portion of the exercise will receive 10pts for correct format of
citations and 10pts for the appropriateness of the selections.
PART 2 - Annotation
1. Select one of the journal articles and write an annotation for it.
[3pts for following directions, 7pts for quality of ann.]
2. Insert the annotation IMMEDIATELY below the citation. Do NOT indent
any lines of the annotation.
Reminder: What are the authors researching? What main techniques did
they employ? What was their most significant result/conclusion?
Do not include opinion. Do not start sentence with "The article..;…; the
the authors...; or smilar wording. If necessary use the spell checker
and grammar tools.
Submit this exercise by 10/22. Paste this entire exercise into your email.
You are resonsible for the margins, spacing, etc. [**send it to yourself
1st to make sure it formats correctly.]
---------------------------------------
Assignment #5 - due Nov 5 [comp help - see note above dated 11/1]
General Direction [organize this before you insert it into your web page]
PART 1 - Construct a working web page. 10pts
This will be in the public domain. [You can have some fun with
it but it should reflect a level of professionalism consistent with
the assignment. [If you want to edit or further personalize it
later - that's your right.] You are on your honor to make a
reasonable effort to do this independently. You may get help from
a peer or computer service person if you need it.
The page should contain the following (minimally):
1. A heading identifying the Web Page as yours.
2. The UAF Disclaimer statement -
http://www.uark.edu/campus/compserv/npp/policies/phpdisclaimer.html
3. A statement about your major and career goals.
4. A statement that this web pg initially is part of a required
assignment for BIOL 2001.
5. The title of your Final Bibliography as a subheading.
Approved Bibliography Title - XXX
6. Under a subheading: Citations for Bibliography. include
the 5 citations required from assignment 4.
7. A link for your email.
8. Anything else you wish to include that is appropriate.
***E-mail me the address of your web page.
-----
If you want to see some web pgs of other UAF folk go to
http://www.uark.edu/campus/People/HomePages/index.html
Some are clever, some overblown; for others I have no printable comment.
-----
**Directions for constructing the Web Pg. will be found at
Web Development
Remember you must 1st set up your account (1st subheading on above pg).
I suggest you use "Composer 7" to create your web page. It is very easy and
you do not have to follow fairly strict html language rules. If you
prefer you, of course, may hand code your web page.
Be sure to test that the web page opens and contains all required material
in a readable (and correctly formatted) form.

BP Assignment 2
9/8 class again in Library; turn in Assignment #2
9/15 class returns to SCEN 604 - No formal assignment but have a
tentative topic for your bibliography. It may not match your Honors research
or be the topic of a previous or current paper submitted for a
grade/credit.
Think about key words/terms you might use for your searches.
9/22 class in SCEN 604 - email or turn in respective parts of Assignment 3
below
Significant info from 9/15
BP Assignment 3 (ready)
I do not have everyone's topic! And some Asnmt #3 are still missing or
incomplete!
Be sure to turn in on time anything that Ms. Salisbury assigns.
I am returning your 9/22 in-class exercise via Ms Salisbuy this coming
Wed. (10/6 - in Library).
The 'check mark' at top of pg indicates in-class activity received and
accepted.
LOOK FOR and Pay particular attention to comments about your proposed
topic.
No returned paper - I assume you were absent.
If you have not submitted a topic yet, email me your topic ASAP.
It may take me a few days to get back to you but I will give you input
when I can.
Remember - NOT human, nor disease per se, physiology of disease organism
may be acceptable -check with me.
In general, submitted topics tended to be too focused [as on one organism
or region] or too broad. Look at my suggestions/comments and rethink
topic. Have final choice of topic ready for me to approve on 10/13 and
ATTEND class - no excuses! We will be back in SCEN for 10/13.

SYLLABUS
Prerequisite: 8 hrs Biological Science
Instructor: Dr C. Bailey; SCEN 725; cfbailey@uark.edu
BISC Phone: 575-3251
This course is designed for sophomores and juniors. It is primarily a
skill course which is designed to train students in the biological
sciences to effectively search the scientific literature, to compile a
topical bibliography and to write an annotation. These skills will
facilitate searches for support material when writing reports and papers
required for courses and your senior thesis.
After weekly sessions where methods and examples are introduced and
discussed, students will complete assignments designed to acquaint them
with the library materials. After proficiency with library resources has
been demonstrated, each student will select a topic on which the student
will compile a bibliography. A specified number of annotations will be
included in the bibliography. All work and citations will focus on
materials available in Mullins Library or the Chemistry Library.
Weekly assignments will be submitted via email and must be posted prior to
the meeting of the next regularly scheduled class [unless otherwise
noted]. Dr. Luti Salisbury, the Science Reference Librarian, will address
electronic search methods in scheduled class periods. Additional guests
may present other topics.
Course Objectives for the Student:
1. To become familiar with major, historical and current
references in the biological sciences
2. To understand the component parts of a scientific paper
3. To understand the significance of various scientific
publications
4. To effectively search for appropriate literature on a
specific topic using a variety of data bases
5. To learn to write an annotation
6. To compile a correctly formatted bibliography with annotations
COURSE EVALUATION
1. Weekly assignments - each correctly completed exercise will be
worth 10 pts. If late, this maximum will be diminished by 2
pts for each day the exercise is tardy. Significant departure from
directions or careless errors will also reduce the grade.
2. Students are expected to participate in class discussions.
Participation will be factored in appropriately.
Attendance in class is expected.
3. The final bibliography will comprise 70% of the total points
for the course. No bibliographies will be accepted late!
There will be no exceptions.
A scale of 90, 80, 70, 60 percentile will be applied
to determine the course grade.
ALL MATERIALS SUBMITTED FOR EVALUATION MUST REPRESENT INDEPENDENT WORK BY
THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT AND IS SUBJECT TO THE "POLICY ON ACADEMIC
DISHONESTY" WHICH APPEARS IN THE U of A CATALOGUE
