COURSE CONTENT:
Histology, the study of cellular organization into tissues and organs,
bridges the disciplines of cell biology and physiology. While biologists
become specialist according to their interests, it is imperative to have a
firm foundation in structural and functional biology. Histology serves to
remind the student that among multicellular organisms, cells are specialized
to do unique jobs that are critical to the survival of the organism.
It is also true that unicellular organisms exhibit elegant organization
which permits specialized compartments to perform highly specialized functions.
Recently the emphasis on the methodologies of molecular biology has
overshadowed the organism. Yet much can be learned by examining the role
of organized structures in different organisms and under different
circumstances.

Our objectives will be:

	to learn to identify morphological and biochemical features of
          eukaryotic cells and tissues as viewed with a variety of technologies;

	to understand the diverse methods of visualizing/documenting
          organelles, cells, tissues, and their functions;

	to assess the contribution different cell types make to tissues
          and organs;

 	to recognize NORMAL and abnormal conformation/associations of
          organelles, cells, tissues and organs

Our approach will include:

	Lecture and demonstrations

	Literature reviews [journals, web sites], reports and discussions

EVALUATION of student performance will include:

	Short assignments/reports and discussion

	2 tests[probably] and exam

ATTENDANCE: your attendance is expected. There will be no makeup exams.
            We will comply with the UAF Weather Policy.

Since we only meet once a wk, it will be critical that you make a serious
commitment to the following:
1. be prepared for class [learn vocabulary for topic and peruse
appropriate chapter(s)]
2. do an initial "runthru" of the figures on the CD for the topic
3. watch the web site for announcements

The instructor reserves the right to modify any aspect of the material
posted above. Students will be notified of any changes.
