Technical Presentations and Posters

We are honored to have Art and Peggy Palmer, who will be our keynote speakers and share their overview of karst research in the U.S. and the world.  Our schedule of presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday is accessible under the Program heading in the banner across the top of this page, and promises to be an enlightening and state-of-the-science review .  A poster session is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.  The venue for this part of the workshop is the Arkansas Student Union.

Banquet

On Wednesday evening, after the final technical presentations, we will be transported out to the Savoy Experimental Watershed (SEW) for the HydroDays Banquet of roast razorback and roast goat, in addition to many other tasty treats to satiate the full range of palates for which karstophiles are noted.  We have arranged presentations by recent researchers at SEW, and the Reverend Dr. Todd Halihan will officiate the formal “Scent of a Drink” competition between the highly competitive karst student groups from different universities.  It is likely that the evening will end on a high note with the raging bonfire and a few spirited games of Hunk’r Down.

Field Trip Day 1—Geology and Karst Landscapes of the Buffalo National River, Northern Arkansas

Mark Hudson and Kenzie Turner of the USGS have been mapping at a 1:24,000 scale in the southern Ozark region for more than ten years, and together with Chuck Bitting of the National Park Service (NPS), who focuses on karst and resource management, they have put together an outstanding field trip that reflects the dominant processes and controls that affect the karst of this beautiful area.  The Buffalo National River is the first national river in the NPS, and it is characterized by high bluffs and vertical karst shafts, some of which have some of the greatest vertical relief in the midcontinent area between the Appalachians and the Rockies.

Field Trip Day 2—Dominant Hydrogeologic Controls of Karst on the Buffalo National River—Float Trip

From our campground, we will go to the put-in point at the Ponca low-water bridge.  We will float from here to Kyles Landing, expanding on our karst knowledge as we explore the surface-water/ground-water interaction and note features from river level.  If you plan to take part in this float, please note this on Registration, and send your $30/person nonrefundable deposit  to Lisa at the address on the registration form.
