Honey Bee Mitotype Map

This is a map showing information about the honey bee mitochondrial DNA COI-COII mitotypes (=haplotypes) we have have found in the United States. So far we have found 16 ‘C’ lineage (Eastern Europe origin), 9 ‘A’ lineage (African origin, includes Africanized honey bees), 5 ‘M’ lineage (Western Europe origin), and 5 ‘O’ lineage (Middle Eastern origin). The majority of these samples are from feral (wild) colonies. Click on the icon button for each sample to find out more information on the sample (mitotype, collection location, date, feral or managed colony, etc). Use the ‘+’ and ‘-’ on the map to zoom in and out. We hope to have all 500 samples on the map soon.

This research will provide valuable information on the extent of mitochondrial DNA genetic variation of honey bees in the United States and may provide a resource for the exchange of genetic lineages.

lineages

A (African), C (Eastern Europe: A. m. ligustica, A. m. carnica, A. m. caucasica), M (Western Europe), O (Middle East)
