APM 2007/08 Headlines:

Spring Advising Soiree on March 27th, 2008:

The University of Arkansas chapter of Alpha Pi Mu hosted the annual Advising Soiree, which is geared to provide students with information about scheduling classes from both upperclassmen and their advisors.  Students signed up to meet with their advisor, and while they waited, they could consult APM members for advice concerning their and enjoy pizza, drinks, and cookies. The IE Plan of Study and a list of IE classes were provided to assist students in making their schedules. The freshmen that chose to join IE also participated in this event. Approximately 50 students attended the event and it was deemed a success, especially with the incoming freshmen.

Initiate Ice Cream Social on March 3rd, 2008:

As a welcoming gesture to our new initiates that had paid dues, our current officers treated future members to ice cream for an hour in the late afternoon on Monday, March 3 from 5:30pm until 7:30pm.   This event was organized to replace the initiate dinner that normally follows the service project because dinner was already provided by the IE department for this semester’s service project.  In all, 4 initiates and 5 officers attended, and the goal of the social event was accomplished.  Current members got to know the new initiates, and everyone had fun eating ice cream.  Three types of ice cream were purchased (strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla), as well as various toppings.

Freshman Open House Service Project on February 26-27th, 2008:

The Industrial Engineering Department hosted an open house event for students in the general Freshman Engineering program to assist them in selecting their major.  Freshmen picked their top three choices in departments within the College of Engineering and went to the Open House sponsored by each. The IE Open House guided freshmen through four interactive stations that demonstrated an aspect of the IE curriculum.  Dinner was provided to the students and volunteers afterwards.  Volunteers assisted the freshmen with signing in, assisted professors at the different, provided mentoring and advice, and served food.  The initiates volunteered for one or both of the events. The event occurred over the course of two days, from 5:30pm until 8:00pm, and was considered a success.  Overall, aroud 60 students came and around 40 chose IE as their major plan of study.

Engine Week Egg Drop on February 20th, 2008:

The University of Arkansas chapter of Alpha Pi Mu hosted one of the events for the Engine Week.  Engine week is a week-long competition between the different engineering departments.  APM hosted the egg drop and provided participating students with an egg, newspaper, and duct-tape with which to make a device within a certain size requirement that would safely hold an egg in a three-story drop. The team whose design dropped the fastest with their egg still intact would win.  The winning team was a group of Electrical Engineering students, but the race was very close.  Only two of the five teams that participated still had unbroken eggs.  The event was very fun and gave IE students a chance to interact with other departments in the spirit of friendly competition.

Spring Welcome-Back Lunch on January 30th, 2008:

The welcome back lunch was a time to get to hang out with other IE students, take a break, and grab free food.  All IE faculty, staff, and students were invited plus interested freshmen from the fall semester.  After everyone had been served, additional students came in to eat because we still had sandwiches.  Six sandwiches were served, as well as drinks, chips, and cookies.  Sandwiches: 1 Turkey, 1 Ham, 1 Roast Beef, 2 Cold Cut Trios, and 1 Veggie from Subway.

Global Studies Information Session on November 19th, 2007:

The University of Arkansas chapter of Alpha Pi Mu initiated its new members for the Fall of 2007 on November 12, 2007 at 6pm in Bell Engineering Center at the University of Arkansas.  A total of 7 students were initiated.  The speaking parts of the ceremony were conducted by Alpha Pi Mu officers Kevin Oden, Adam Keeley, Cory Bridges, and Brittney Bogle.  Following the highly secretive initiation ceremony, the new members enjoyed food and fellowship with several existing members.  The food was purchased from Noodles, a local Italian restaurant.  Fun was had by all who participated in this important event.

Bake Sale Service Project on November 9th, 2007:

APM hosted a bake sale as an alternative service project event for initiates.  Because not all of the initiates could make the initial service project, the bake sale provided the remaining four initiates a chance to take part in community service.  The event was held from 10:00am until 12:00pm in the atrium of Bell Engineering Center.  Initiates participated in providing baked items as well as selling the items.  Some faculty and staff of the Industrial Engineering Department contributed food as well.  The majority of the food was sold, and a significant amount of money (around $150) was raised.  This money was donated to a local charity (LifeSource International).  Afterwards, all initiates were invited to attend lunch at Jim’s Razorback Pizza.

Halloween Can Food Drive Service Project on October 31st, 2007:

Alpha Pi Mu organized a canned food drive to act as a service project for APM members and initiates.  Three initiates participated in this service project.  The officers and initiates dressed up for Halloween and went “Trick-Or-Canning” in nearby neighborhoods.  The officers chose to dress up as the Village People.  The activity took place on October 31, from 5:30pm – 7:00pm in Candlewood, a local Fayetteville neighborhood.  A week prior to the event, some of the officers delivered flyers to the homes in the neighborhood, informing the residents of the upcoming canned food drive.  The flyer stated that anyone who wished to donate but would not be home could simply leave the cans in bag outside their front door.  The response from the residents was excellent, and APM collected dozens of canned goods.  This event was a success on many levels; the members and initiates enjoyed serving the community, socializing with each other, and wearing Halloween costumes.

Fall Advising Soiree on October 24th, 2007:

The fall Advising Soiree took place on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30pm until 7:30pm in two designated rooms.  One room was for eating pizza, receiving advise from APM members, and determining schedules.  The other room was used for faculty advising.  Students decided upon the classes for the upcoming semester and then presented it to their faculty advisor for approval.  The freshmen engineering students were still part of the General Engineering Program, so they were not in attendance.  Thus, there were only around 30 people that participated.  Since they were not as many people as usual, everyone was advised within the first hour.  Pizza, drinks, and cookies were provided to the students, as well as advice about the scheduling of classes.

Bowling Social on October 10th, 2007:

Alpha Pi Mu organized a bowling event for the industrial engineering students as well as IE faculty and staff.  The event was held on October 18, from 7pm – 9pm at Ozark Lanes, a local bowling alley.  The event was free to the students, and pizza and drinks were provided.  APM rented lanes and shoes for those who wanted to bowl.  Just over 20 students and one faculty member attended the event.  Although attendance was down from the previous year (last year’s high turnout was high due to the event being immediately after the Calculus I Midterm, a date that was unavailable for bowling this year), everyone who attended still thoroughly enjoyed bowling, eating, and socializing with fellow Industrial Engineering students and faculty.

IE Fall Picnic on September 20th, 2007:

The Industrial Engineering Picnic was put on as a team effort between Alpha Pi Mu and the Institute of Industrial Engineering.  The purpose of this picnic is to build relationships among faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students who may not have much contact outside of the classroom. It was also used as a recruiting event of freshman because of the new general first year engineering that has been implemented. Footballs and Frisbees flew all across The Gardens at the University of Arkansas.  A football game ensued between the freshmen/sophomores and the juniors/seniors.  Everyone had a great time.  Hot dogs and chips were the main course, and drinks were served.   This picnic is one of the most anticipated annual departmental events.  This year’s picnic was no disappointment to the trend.

Fall Welcome-Back Lunch on September 10th, 2007:

APM hosted a Welcome Back to School Lunch in the Imhoff Lounge at 11:30 AM.  Subway and Wal-Mart sandwiches were provided along with beverages.  All industrial engineering students were invited to the event.  The event was a success: approximately 50 students, faculty, and staff attended.  This event was funded by Associated Student Government and S.H.U.R. funds.

APM 2006/07 Headlines:

S.H.U.R. Baseball Game Cookout on May 6th, 2007:

Alpha Pi Mu organized a cookout at one of the baseball games during Arkansas’ stellar season. Officers arrived early to stake out one of the grills and picnic tables with a view of the stadium. Hotdogs and hamburgers were grilled and served to all attending industrial engineering students. Chips and drinks were also served. Everyone in attendance had a good time, and looked forward to the baseball event next year.

APM/IIE S.H.U.R. Resume Workshop on January 31st, 2007:

APM hosted with IIE a resume workshop on January 31st from 11:30am to 1:00pm in the Imhoff lounge.  Andy Matthews, Tarek Taha, and a representative from Wal-Mart were the guests of honor, who visited with students and revised their resume.  The workshop was very helpful to students since it i\was held a week before the Career Fair. While waiting for their turn to speak to one of the guests, students munched on sandwiches provided by APM, and chips and drinks provided by Andy Matthews.  The turnout was great with about twenty students showing up.  The only problem was that there was not enough time for all the students to have the chance to get their resume revised.  Next time, the guests should be asked to go over student’s resumes within five minutes so that students would not have to wait so long or miss their chance.  Also, students were able to enter their name to win an I-Pod shuffle donated generously from Wal-Mart after having their resume checked by at least two guests.  Overall, the event turned out fantastic.

Global Studies Information Session on  November 9th, 2006:

Alpha Pi Mu hosted a Global Studies Event and invited IE students that have studied abroad in the past to share their experiences with interested students. The event was held on Thursday, November 9th from 6:00pm - 7:30pm. APM helped the speakers with their presentations and provided the necessary materials for that.

Engineering Statistics Second Review Session on October 4th, 2006:

APM hosted a review session for the Engineering Statistics students on October 4, 2006 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.  Many students showed up even though APM was only able to advertise the review session the week of the test.  Kevin Oden, Kim Nguyen, and Roger Snelgrove helped students with their homework, review tests, and calculator questions.  The TAs taught students how to calculate the normal and Poisson statistics on their TI-83.  Kim Nguyen had the first review test done before the review session, which proved to be very helpful to students since they were able to check their answers with her answers.  Overall, the review session was successful.

Pizza for Students in Principles of Industrial Engineering on September 28th, 2006:

To give encouragement to the students in Principles of Industrial Engineering, Alpha Pi Mu provided pizza as a snack after their first exam.  APM purchased pizzas for the event, and reserved a room near their classroom.  The event was well received by all of the students.  They were able to relax after their test while enjoying pizza and drinks.  They were able to talk to the upper classmen about their exam and anything else on their minds.  To ensure future successful events, we concluded by asking them what they prefer to eat, drink, and other events of interest to them.

APM Fall Initiation Information Session on September 22nd, 2006:

The University of Arkansas chapter of Alpha Pi Mu held its fall initiate information session on Friday, September 22, 2006 in the Industrial Engineering Conference room.  Approximately fifteen eligible initiates plus the current officers and mentor attended the meeting, which focused on introducing the possible members to the goals and highlights of Alpha Pi Mu.  Everyone present enjoyed some delicious refreshments as they filled out their membership cards and asked questions about the society.  The current officers were pleased with the number of students who came to the meeting, especially since this is the first semester our chapter has invited graduate students to join.  The meeting was very successful, and we expect to see many of the attendees again at the service project and at induction later this semester.

IE Picnic on September 14th, 2006:

The Industrial Engineering Picnic was put on as a team effort between Alpha Pi Mu and the Institute of Industrial Engineering.  The purpose of this picnic is to build relationships among faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students who may not have much contact outside of the classroom.  Footballs and Frisbees flew all across the Garden, the University of Arkansas’ newest picnic area.  A football game ensued between the freshmen/sophomores and the juniors/seniors.  The outcome of the game was debatable, but everyone had a good time.  Water balloons provided excitement as they flew through the air and soaked all of those in their path.  Luckily, no cell phones were injured in the process.  Hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, chips, baked beans, potato salad, cookies, and drinks were served.   This picnic is one of the most anticipated annual departmental events.  This year’s picnic was no disappointment to the trend.

Engineering Statistics First Review Session on September 13th, 2006:

APM organized a review session to prepare students for the first Engineering Statistics exam.  The session was held 13 September, 7:00 – 9:00pm in the Imholf study lounge.  Fifteen students participated in the review session.  Topics covered included, discrete random variables, continuous random variables, and basic probability problem solving.  The participating students said the session was helpful.
