    Autobiography of an unknown Avinash

About me. Hi! If you want to know a little more about me, here goes. I was born in Trichur, Kerala, aka "God's own country (at least according to the tourism promos!)". I was brought up in Madras, now called <tsk tsk> "Chennai ". I still haven't figured the historical validity of this odd name. 'Madras' had that "oh-so-British" flavor and always brings fond memories of the metropolis I grew up in.

I did my schooling in Vidya Mandir, Mylapore, arguably the best school in Madras (usually referred to as VM in Chennai parlance). I have a lot of mixed memories of my school days....carefree days mixed with some teeth chattering, nail-biting studying. At least when it comes to studies, I think my school days during exams were among the toughest days of my life. (I still shudder when I think of the hindi exams that we were subjected too..*shudder*). So, after 17 short years in Madras, I packed my bags to do my Engineering in Kerala (Calicut University), and true to the cliché, those were happy times. Let me digress...Kerala is a truly beautiful place and whatever be the hype associated with it, it still is a must-see.

OK. Now coming back to the brief history of Avinash Kashyap, I decided to pursue graduate study in Electrical Engineering at the University of Arkansas. It has been quite a ride since then. The sheer fact that I am learning something new every day is enough motivation to keep chugging for a PhD, and that is exactly where I am headed.....

I love Carnatic music (was trained for around 2 years) and enjoy listening to instrumentals, esp, by Mandolin U. Sreenivas and the flute prodigy Master Shashank (who is my school mate incidentally ;)). I try hard (and miserably fail mostly) to identify ragas. I think it is a tougher nut to crack than a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering. Carnatic music is perhaps what keeps me sane sometimes!

Reading is another passion of mine...having devoured the works of most of the contemporary fiction writers, I am always in the lookout for interesting titles...If you have any suggestions, let me know. Of course, after coming to grad school, my reading pace is shall we say...err...not the fastest. (I took about a week to finish the Da Vinci Code...ssshhhh...)

Well, thats about what I can think of now...I will try to update this page frequently, though one needs to take that statement with a pinch of salt :). If you have the time/inclination please check out the other pages too.

Thanks for visiting!
