"A gutter boy or a gutter girl is just somebody born in a gutter, lives in a gutter, and will die in a gutter. And then is swept right into the sewer. You'll never hear from them again. Never." - Sam Fuller
Pour yourself a scotch, light up a stogie, drag out your old war medals, and kick the dog out of your favorite chair; it's time to settle in for THE TYPEWRITER, THE RIFLE & THE MOVIE CAMERA, an entertaining homage to crotchety b-movie renegade Sam Fuller, by director Adam Simon and producer / narrator Tim Robbins.
Everybody's either corrupt or pathetic in Fuller's macho and violent underworld of prostitutes, petty criminals, perverts and commies - characters he no doubt encountered during his years as a crime reporter, decorated WWII veteran, and pulp fiction writer. A manic little wise-ass with a cigar perpetually clenched between his back teeth, Fuller bought the farm on Halloween 1997, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of low-budget, black-and-white war films, westerns and thrillers such as THE NAKED KISS, the story of a reformed prostitute who ends up having to kill her husband when she discovers he's a child molester; PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET, in which
a pickpocket and a whore are chased by communist spies who believe they've stolen their microfilm; and SHOCK CORRIDOR , a disturbing social comment on the mental health system in which a journalist loses his mind after working undercover in an insane asylum.
